On Friday August 10th, 2018, at 10.52pm something VERY exciting happened at the Toronto Zoo. One of their endangered pygmy hippos gave birth to a baby girl!
I mean… come on. ?
This little cutie weighed in at 8.7kg (19.2lbs) and was born to mom Kindia, who arrived at the zoo from Parc Zoologique de La Fleche in Sarthe, France in 2016 as a part of a global breeding program, and dad Harvey.
According to the Toronto Zoo, there may only be about 2000 to 3000 pygmy hippos left in the wild in West Africa, so this birth is big news!
The first 30 days are crucial for mom and baby hippo, so they are under the watchful eye of their keepers for the time being.
In the meantime, we’ll just keep watching these videos on repeat.
Note: Mom and baby are not visible to the public right now, but keep an eye out on the Toronto Zoo Facebook page and Instagram for updates. If you’re visiting the Toronto Zoo in the near future, you can still say hi to dad, Harvey. He’s pretty cute too. 😉
