I love this shirt.
That original quote — written by I-have-no-clue — always bugged me because even if you do what you LOVE every damn day, it’s still work.
Even if your job is snuggling puppies 8 hours a day, it’s still work because at some point it’ll be too much. You’ll be tired. A puppy will pee on you. You will get fleas.
Nothing is awesome all the time and holy crap wouldn’t life be boring if it was??
I love this shirt because the amendment is so damn true.
It’s a brutal thing to work for yourself and to run your own business.
It’s equal parts fulfilling and horrifying. It’s exciting and you feel amazing one day and the next you think WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK am I doing this for.
It’s feast or famine.
It’s shining confidence and crippling self-doubt.
It’s waking up knowing one thing and going to sleep knowing something completely different.
It’s trying to do everything and beating yourself up when you can’t perfect the imperfectible.
But I can’t imagine doing anything else.
I love being able to structure my days and the ability to be flexible. I love that I can choose the direction of my business, make changes on the fly, create new products, try new things, and let my creativity fly.
My partner recently (back in April) went back to working full time out of the house and I’m really not sure how he does it.
Maybe it’s that I’ve been doing this for so long, the opposite world seems so foreign and bizarre to me. I joke that I’m unemployable, but it’s mostly that I like to do things my way *coughAriescough* and having a boss doesn’t really mesh with that.
Right, boss Désirée?
Right.
Good work.
You get a raise.
Cheers.
I raise a glass to all my self-employed pals who are sat there wondering why the HECK they ever thought it was a good idea.
Because in the end, you know your reasons and even if you decide someday that it’s not for you, you’ll know you took the chance.
And that’s all we can ever do in life.
Ms. Frizzle said so.
